Your Products May Already Be in ChatGPT. Is Your Shopify Data Ready for AI Shoppers?

A growing number of shoppers no longer start with a search engine or a marketplace. They start with a question. “What’s a good waterproof walking boot for wide feet under £150?” “Find me a personalised gift for a one-year-old.” They ask ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google’s AI Mode or Perplexity, and the assistant comes back with a shortlist of specific products.

For Shopify merchants, this is no longer a future trend. Shopify has spent 2026 building what it calls Agentic Storefronts: a way for a store’s product catalogue to be surfaced directly inside AI assistants, so shoppers can discover products in a conversation and move straight to buying them. According to Shopify, orders attributed to AI channels on its platform grew roughly eleven-fold between January 2025 and January 2026.

The businesses that benefit will not necessarily be the biggest. They will be the ones whose product information is clear, complete and trustworthy enough for an AI assistant to recommend with confidence.

What Agentic Storefronts actually do

In simple terms, Agentic Storefronts make your Shopify catalogue readable by AI platforms through Shopify’s own infrastructure, without you building a separate integration for each one. You manage which AI channels your products appear on from the Shopify admin, and attribution flows back so you can see what those channels are producing.

A few points are worth understanding:

  • Availability is rolling out. Shopify began switching Agentic Storefronts on for eligible merchants in March, starting with the US, and added a dedicated area in the admin in May. ChatGPT came first, with other assistants in earlier stages of access. Availability varies by market and store, so check your own admin rather than assuming.
  • Checkout stays with Shopify. After early experiments with buying entirely inside a chat window, the direction of travel is that discovery happens in the assistant and the purchase completes through the merchant’s Shopify checkout. Shopify has been emphatic that AI shopping will not bypass it.
  • Eligibility has basic requirements. Products must be eligible for Shopify’s catalogue, your store needs complete and visible terms of service, privacy and refund policies, and guest checkout must be allowed.

Even where agentic selling is not yet switched on for your store, AI assistants are already reading the open web and recommending products from it. The preparation is the same either way.

Product data is the new SEO

An AI assistant cannot see your beautiful product photography the way a human browser can, and it cannot be charmed by your homepage. It reads data. When a shopper asks a specific question, the assistant looks for products whose information clearly answers it.

That makes the quality of your product data the single biggest factor in whether you are recommended. Most Shopify stores have significant room to improve.

Titles that describe, not just name. “The Hartley” tells an AI assistant nothing. “The Hartley — Men’s Waterproof Leather Walking Boot, Wide Fit” tells it almost everything it needs.

Descriptions that answer real questions. Materials, dimensions, sizing advice, care instructions, who the product is for and what problem it solves. Write for the questions shoppers actually ask, in plain language.

Complete identifiers. GTINs or barcodes, SKUs and consistent vendor names help AI systems match your products accurately and avoid confusion with similar items.

Accurate variants, pricing and stock. Assistants that recommend an out-of-stock size or an outdated price lose trust quickly, and so do you. Keep inventory and pricing synchronised.

Structured attributes. Use Shopify’s product categories and metafields for attributes such as colour, material, fit, age range or compatibility, so products can be filtered and compared reliably.

Good images with descriptive alt text. Helpful for accessibility, search engines and AI systems alike.

Trust signals matter more in a conversation

When an assistant recommends a product, it is effectively vouching for the store. Stores that look reliable are easier to recommend.

  • Clear policies. Delivery times, returns windows and refund terms written in plain English and easy to find.
  • Genuine reviews on product pages, collected through a recognised reviews app.
  • Consistent business information across your store, Google Business Profile and social profiles.
  • A fast, mobile-friendly store, because the shopper who clicks through from a chat expects the page to load instantly on their phone.

Content still does the heavy lifting

Product data helps an assistant choose between products. Content helps it understand which store to trust in the first place. Buying guides, size guides, comparison articles and “how to choose” posts on your Shopify blog answer the broader questions shoppers ask before they reach a specific product, and they give AI systems rich, well-structured material to draw on.

A store with a steady stream of genuinely useful articles builds visibility that compounds over time, in classic search and in AI answers.

A practical checklist

  • Check your Shopify admin for Agentic Storefronts and the AI channels available to your store.
  • Confirm guest checkout is enabled and your policies are complete and visible.
  • Audit your top 50 products: titles, descriptions, GTINs, categories, variants and images.
  • Add structured attributes through metafields for the details customers most often ask about.
  • Publish buying guides for your main product categories.
  • Review attribution data monthly to see which products AI channels are surfacing.
